Spring in Tunisia

In spite of the promise of warmer temperatures, spring remained cold in Tunisia.  Several of my fellow IBLV students and I struck out on adventures across Tunisia to explore the remote and forgotten places that most tourists would never fathom of visiting.  More often than not we returned to Tunis quite pleased with our travels.  Sometimes we came away with incredible stories, too.

  • Football Match – Several friends and I attend a football match between one of the Tunis teams and the Djerba club.  We were rooting for Djerba which coincidentally won the match.
  • Candy-Gram – My friend Karlina sent me a wonderful candy care package from the states to chase away the cold and the doldrums of the Tunisian spring.
  • Islamic Scholars Conference – As part of my employment with CEMAT, I helped facilitate the Fulbright Islamic Scholars Conference.  The group was lucky enough to tour the inner sanctums of the Mosque of the Barber and the Grand Mosque of Kairouan.  The old French tourist who was snubbed when he tried to follow us into the Mosque of the Barber made the whole trip worth it.
  • The Isle of Kerkennah – I joined three friends from the UK and New Zealand on a small island off the coast of Sfax, Tunisia for an evening hunkered in our hotel rooms against a small storm.
  • Makthar – An innocent trip to the out-of-the-way town of Makthar turns into an adventure as I board the night bus to Tunis.  An AK-47 muzzle in the face is not the best way to be woken up at a checkpoint.
  • The British Invade My Pool – Claire and two of her friends visiting from London managed to crash our pool, have a little party with Jeff and me, and drink all of our alcohol.
  • The Marble Factory – One of my internships in Tunisia was at the Tunis-Carthage Marble Factory. These are a few pictures on the job.
  • Bourguiba School Goodbyes – My classmates and I say our goodbyes on the last day of language school.
  • CEMAT Tour – What awaits a visitor to CEMAT?  A photo montage of the American Center for Maghreb Studies in Tunisia.
  • Weekend with Francesca – We explore the western reaches of Tunisia.  Jugurta’s Table is conquered, apricots and fresh butter are consumed, drunks are met, and a sweltering night is spent in Nefta.
  • Children’s Band – A children’s band takes over the streets of Tunis for a parade
