Summer 2009

Before I returned home to Oregon I decided to take a quick detour to Tomales Bay for a sailing excursion with a friend from working at JPL. I also crashed a yacht club party while I was in town. This was actually the second time that I visited the yacht club and bay over the summer. The first time was about a month prior.

Ahead full!

I’m on a boat!  I’m on a boat! Everybody look at me cause I’m sailing on a boat!

Midway out on our sail some of Sondy’s friends motored up alongside and handed across a beer using a net.

Coming back into Las Vegas after seeing the Hoover Dam we ran into a nice little storm.  It dumped buckets of rain on west Las Vegas but mostly missed where we were driving.  Here are just a couple of photos of the fun.

Yes my friends, I took the damn dam tour.  At the Hoover Dam there are several tour options.  I opted for the most expensive and extensive tour.  We got a tour of the penstocks that carry water from the lake through deep underground tunnels to the powerhouses, the Nevada powerhouse, the upper inspection galleries, and the stairway to heaven.  Words cannot describe how impressive and awe-inspiring this dam truly is.  Photos can’t do it justice either.  One must go and experience it in person.

IMG_8393

The transmission towers actually lean over the canyon walls so the cables can run unobstructed down to the powerhouse.

IMG_8394

Transmission lines run everywhere!  Back before the grid was setup, each line ran to a different community or power district that was promised a cut of Hoover Dam’s power.  Not as efficient as today’s system!

IMG_8395

Yes, that is a LOT of power lines.

IMG_1193

We got some sweet kids hardhats to wear on the tour so we’d be easily identifiable in case we wandered off.

IMG_8405

Inside the Nevada powerhouse.  That’s a whole boatload of turbines!

The tour guide told us a little bit about how the turbines are serviced.

IMG_8408

Art deco touches abound inside the dam.  This is the original entryway into the dam for tours.  Now only the most expensive tour option gets to walk down this hall.

This photo is shot looking straight down.  100 feet below is another inspection gallery.

IMG_8411

A window to the world.  This is the upper Arizona inspection hatch.  It was also a source of air when the dam was more actively curing and cooling.  Big fans were fitted further back in this passageway to move air through the structure.

IMG_8429

Super excited!

IMG_8430

An inspection point between two concrete pour blocks.  This is the worst place in the whole dam.  The blocks settled a couple inches out of alignment.  Every other block is nearly perfect.  Not too bad considering it was built in the early 30s!

The road from Vegas to Hoover Dam goes through some great country. There are also a few odd sights along the way. Aside from the dam itself, the new bridge being built to span the canyon is the most impressive man-made object out in the desert. If we include naturally occurring things, the desert is by far the most impressive sight to behold.

We took a shortcut through the Nellis Air Force Base where the current-as-of-writing-this largest solar array in the world is constructed.  It is a massive complex to be sure!

At night Las Vegas comes alive. After a rousing round of Sangria at the Firefly to light up the night we drove through the strip for a little fun.  BTW, if you are ever in Vegas you really should go to the Firefly.  Great food, great atmosphere, and delicious drinks.

Las Vegas has a wonderful little preserve and musem called the Springs Preserve.  The perserve is located on the grounds of one of the original springs that made the founding of Las Vegas possible.  Almost all of the natural springs in the Las Vegas valley long ago stopped flowing due to over-pumping and other human-caused changes to the environment.  However at the Springs Preserve, the original landscape and environment has been preserved and recreated.  The attached museum and other facilities are also quite marvelous.

The road from San Diego to Vegas skirts through the southern portions of Los Angeles before roaring over the mountains and into the desert. Mile after mile of freeway unfold across the desert as cars rocket back and forth between the two capitals of sin, lust, and greed. On this particular day a batch of moisture had found its way into the arid interior. Thunderheads loomed large to the east. I encountered my first taste of rain since leaving Oregon as I crested the last hill and beheld the city of Las Vegas.

During our last night in San Diego we went north to the Pacific Beach area to enjoy some food, booze, and a nice sunset. Jon even managed to swim in the ocean!

During our time at the IDETC09 conference we had some time to wander around town. While there are a lot of good bars in San Diego, there are also a lot of tourist traps. We were able to find most of the good ones and stay away from the bad. Here are a few photos to prove that we were there.

As part of the conference we got in free to a San Diego Padres game. This was my first baseball game ever. I had to have the rules explained to me a few times before I figured out what was going on. After a few innings we left because the beer was expensive and the game was boring.
