Tomorrow at 10am is the big moment. I will defend my PhD qualifier paper. The presentation I put together is available here. The part that I am really dreading is when I have to answer questions about my paper and about my coursework. The coursework question phase was my weak point during my masters defense.

If you happen to see any glaring errors before 10am tomorrow, let me know so I can correct them.

I should be done and know if I passed or not by noon. Depending upon the outcome, I will either have a pleasant afternoon or a rotten one.

I just sent in the final version of my PhD Qualifier.  The current THUNDERSTORM OF DOOM has been giving me some problems with my computer turning on and off due to power blinks.  At least we aren’t having tornadoes like they are further up the valley.

Anyway, this is the FINAL VERSION and it’s already been submitted to my committee. Now I just have to defend it next week on Thursday. As that event comes up, I’ll have a nice presentation to post, too.

Since the weekend I have slimmed down my qualifier by about 15 pages and 200 citations.  It is *just* the right size.  This is still a working draft and further revisions will probably be made.  However, it is pretty close to what the final will be.  Check it out.

For those of you interested in what I have been doing the last three weeks, take a gander at the most recent draft of my PhD qualifier. It is about 250 citations too large and about double the length it should be at the moment. The next couple of days I will be focusing on trimming it down to something manageable. My goal is a 15 page (text only), 12 point font, 1 inch margin document with about 100 citations. It currently stands at 15 pages with 10 point font, 0.5 inch margins, and 354 citations. All of the content and citations that will get cut are not in vain however. They will be incorporated into my dissertation.

This paper is due on June 4th. I defend June 11th. The defense is not something I am looking forward to.

As far as I know, this is the final version of my Masters Thesis. Everyone has signed off except for the graduate school dean. That signature should come shortly.

I have already started doing background research for my PhD. The topic will be broadly based on risk and reliability engineering, trade-spaces, margin trading, cultural differences, and other such fun stuff. My new major professor, Dr. Irem Tumer, is finishing up a multi-university funding proposal to get everything setup for the next few years. At this point it all sounds rather exciting!
