Kings Valley

I went on a quick 50 mile ride up and over Lewisburg Saddle and through Kings Valley with my new and improved higher handlebars.  The bars are AWESOME.  I don’t know why I waited so long to get them and put them on my bike.  I still have an airhorn to install on the bike and need to decide if I’m getting highway pegs or not but it’s just about completely outfitted the way I want it.  Oh yeah, still need to trade Art in Redding for a taller windshield and find a rear rack.

This evening I took the motorcycle out for a quick blast around Lewisburg Saddle and Kings Valley.  It was nice to be out and riding.  I scraped my pegs a couple of times on some tight corners at high speeds. :-)

Total distance: about 50 miles.

Also should note I put my ADV sticker on the back of my motorcycle :-)

Gas purchase: 2.08 gallons @93.4 miles for 44.9 mpg (probably low because of going up Mary’s Peak and carrying Emily as a passenger).

Yesterday I rode about 92 miles with a passenger.  Emily was a willing test subject to see if I know how to pilot a bike with someone sitting behind me.  We went part way up Marys Peak to where Rich and Greg were with a bunch of other Something Awful goons shooting off massive amounts of ammunition.  I had the opportunity to shoot a couple of different pistols and an AK-74 (I think?).  All were fun.  We were right at the snow line, too.  Rather surreal.  It felt a little like Kosovo.

On the way back into town we decided to do the Kings Valley route.  It was all quite fun!

Today Seth and I went on a leisurely jaunt up the Kings Valley highway and then back through Albany to Corvallis.  This was the test ride for my newly rebuilt shocks and improved helmet.  Both performed well.

The whole ride was about 81 miles.

I ditched studying and work for a bit to go for a quick motorcycle ride this afternoon.  The loop took me up through Kings Valley, Dallas, Rickreal, and Salem.  Then I turned south through Independence and Camp Adair back to Corvallis.  In total it was about 90 miles.

This afternoon I took the PC800 out for a quick romp through Kings Valley via Airlie.  On the way there I filled up with gas.  It took 2.77 gallons of gas.  The last tank lasted 129.5 miles giving me a fuel economy of 46.75.  Not too bad considering I was having a lot of fun on the throttle all of those miles.  Tonight’s ride was about 46 miles total.

This afternoon I went on a quick 50 mile jaunt over some of my favorite close back roads. To get between two of the roads I took about a 4 mile stretch of gravel, compacted mud, and dirt. The bike was a little squirrely in the front end but did fine overall. It’s pretty fun having mud streaks down the side of a street bike!

This afternoon once the sun came out and burned off all of the fog, Carl, Emily, and I jumped on our motorcycles and rode out through Kings Valley.  Even with the sun, it was still very cold in the shadows and shade.   This was Emily’s first time on a real motorcycle in many years.  She discovered that Carl’s passenger seat was not the most comfortable place to sit for a 75 mile ride.  Several times we stopped to give her a stretch break.

When we got back to Corvallis, my roommate’s boyfriend came out to talk motorcycles with us.  He has a highly-modded Suzuki V-Strom 650 that he takes off road into some crazy stuff.  He also happens to have a very nice 06 or 07 stock V-Strom for sale.  I’m considering buying it if I can find $4000 to spend so frivolously.  It’s about time that I upgraded to a bigger bike.

Before heading out of town we stopped for gas.  I filled up with 72.7 miles showing on the trip odometer.  The bike took 1.599 gallons for a fuel economy of 45.4 MPG.  Not bad considering I’ve idled my bike quite a bit to remind it what it feels like to run in between these infrequent winter rides.

We rode about 75 miles.

Yesterday Samantha and I went on a lovely drive through the hills west of Corvallis.  We passed through Kings Valley among other cute little towns.  The trees were especially brilliant as the sun set in the west.

This power poll looked a little funny as we approached it. Upon closer inspection, we found that it was broken in half. The local power company had decided to fix it by bolting another pole onto the side of the first pole. It might not be the best fix in the world, but the poll seemed to be holding up well!

This afternoon, we went for a little stroll around campus to enjoy the warm afternoon sun and the beautiful foliage on the university trees.

I went out on a test drive of my freshly-changed oil, and with a tank full of Seafoam, along the Kings Valley Highway. Being late in the day and desiring to get a move on, I didn’t bother calling up anyone else to see if they wanted to ride with me. Hopping on my bike, I took off from Samantha’s house out along Western Boulevard to Highway 20/34 through Philomath. Past Philomath, I took the Highway 233 Kings Valley turn. On an earlier ride with Jaime, we had encountered a very long stretch of road construction. This time, the road was smooth but somewhat slick from the freshly laid down oil and tar. I don’t plan to try that portion of the route again until after a few good rain storms clean things up.

Just before Dallas, I went past a road for Falls City. Looking down the road, it looked well paved and banked but I didn’t turn down it. Maybe next time I’m out that way, I’ll go and visit Falls City.

Going through Dallas, I went straight as I was heading out of town toward 99W where I should have gone left. I ended up crossing the railroad tracks and heading up a hill. All looked fine as it was paved. I thought that perhaps I had stumbled upon a nice little back road to Monmouth. This was the case. However, at the top of the hill, the road turned to gravel. Rather than turn around I kept on going with the hope that the gravel would soon run out. Luck was not with me. After a long and nerve-wracking parade at 25 mph, I ended up on a paved road that dropped down into Monmouth and right onto the northwest edge of the Western Oregon University (WOU) campus.

This was my first time in Monmouth and my first visit to WOU. The campus itself is rather small by comparison to Oregon State University. However, it is very cute and extremely lush. Everywhere everthing was green. It reminded me a lot of Amherst College in Amherst, Massachussetts. I toured around campus on my bike before I headed back out to 99W. The ride back to Corvallis was largely uneventful.

My bike performed like a champ. I didn’t notice much in the way of oil burning this time, either. Perhaps that problem is solved.

My odometer recorded about 73 miles.
